Liberon competition winners

The winners for the recent Liberon competition have now been announced and are as follows:

David Thomson – wooden toys – 1st place

The wooden toys shown here were all made by David for his grandchildren, all of whom love construction machines and different types of trucks. Since retirement, David has enjoyed making these projects and as well as building his skills, he also gets a lot out of teaching his grandchildren and passing woodworking skills on to them.

David started off by making simple toys but over time, has developed his skills and has been able to embark on more complex projects.

Stuart Young – over arm table – 2nd place

Stuart's over arm table makes use of oak offcuts and is designed with an Arts and Crafts aesthetic in mind. He started by cutting a space for the finger joints in the front and bottom pieces, before staining the oak lengths with ebony wood stain. Next, he employed steam-bending techniques in order to achieve a slight outer bend on the outer back lengths.

For this he used a wall paper steamer, with the nozzle removed, and fed it into a plastic bag for two hours. He then clamped and glued the positions in place before finishing off with a couple of coats of quick drying polyurethane varnish. Overall, Stuart was very pleased with the overall look and plans on making a second version with a few updates.

Helga made this bespoke, made-to-measure fireplace for her living room. Using her secondary school woodwork skills, she measured, cut, carved, prepared, smoothed, and painted it.
