A centre of excellence in making, today, the Joseph Walsh Studio Workshop is one of Europe’s leading studio workshops

Art, craft, design & technical innovation

Joseph Walsh established his Studio in 1999 on the south coast of Ireland, where he’s still based today. Merging art, craft, design and technical innovation, the Studio creates monumental sculptures, one-of-a-kind site-specific commissions and collectible design editions, primarily in wood, but also incorporating other materials such as stone and bronze.

From the beginning of his career, Joseph Walsh pursued innovation in making based on traditional techniques, often from other craft forms, which enabled him to develop new ways and methods of making. From early years of experimentation and development, he began to break some of the traditional rules of making – and even some of his own – to create the bold, expressive forms for which he’s known today. These reveal an intuitive relationship with making and a deep understanding of materials and process.

The DALTAE Training Programme offers individuals the opportunity to learn alongside other makers

Joseph’s achievements in the design world have been widely recognised; his work has been acquired by major collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum and Museum of Arts and Design in New York; the Centre Pompidou and Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris; the Devonshire Collections at Chatsworth House and the National Gallery of Ireland. This year, as part of the Studio’s 25th anniversary celebrations, Joseph Walsh is participating in a series of museum talks, including an event at the Design Museum, London on 4 June.

A centre of excellence

Today, the Joseph Walsh Studio Workshop is one of Europe’s leading studio workshops. A centre of excellence in making, it’s committed to increasing the knowledge and understanding of wood as well as raising standards of craftsmanship.

In 2022, the Workshop established the ‘Daltae’ Training Programme, which now offers a three-year full-time programme to those wishing to learn alongside the Workshop Team and eventually become a maker at Joseph Walsh Studio. Meanwhile, in the Design Studio, a team of design developers undertake the research and development of Joseph’s ambitious concepts.
